Seasonal Difficulties
Motion Graphics * Kinetic Typography * Open-Ended
Problem Statement
Seasonal Difficulties is a project that began as an open-ended prompt, intended to be an exploration on a We'll be Right Back transition, a Technical Difficulties screen, or a general bumper. The few requirements involved type-based animation and a strong concept or narrative. I opted to explore Technical Difficulties screens, which would evolve into an exploration on how colors and sounds, when paired with animation, can create an imaginative environment and build a rich sense of understanding.
Process
I approached my take on a Technical Difficulties screen with an experiential mindset to engage the senses. To create a rich experience that transports the viewer somewhere imaginative or nostalgic, I used color associations, a variety of motion, and sound clips to build the four seasons, all while using Technical Difficulties as the medium. When creating the animations for each season, I asked myself questions like, “What sounds do I want to highlight? Do slow or fast movements define this season?” and, “Do I want these letters to double as something else beyond the eye?”
Conclusion
Seasonal Difficulties is a conceptual, experimental piece that presents a rich experience of the seasons through the well-known concept of “Technical Difficulties.” The final product stands as a strong example of how a concept can be wordlessly communicated through elements of color, sound, and motion. Ultimately, Seasonal Difficulties is a small journey through the seasons experienced through the senses, made possible through intentional design choices.
